In line with the objective of Universiti Malaya to produce scientists in various fields, the Chemistry Division of PASUM also has an active research staff.
The Chemistry Research Facilities available at PASUM are:
1. Polymeric Materials Research Laboratory located at MK5 (Polymer Materials Research Group)
Research in this laboratory is focused on the modification and application of polymers. Among our most important work here is keeping in line with the ‘Waste to Wealth Mission’. Much of it involves the study of the structure and properties of polymer materials that have been modified from natural sources and commercial raw materials to obtain better diversified economic benefits with prospectively useful products. We also have research that focuses on the synthesis and modification of hydrogels from natural sources for biomedical purposes. There is also research being done to produce biopolymer-based polymer electrolytes and the manufacture of electrochromic devices and dye-sensitized solar cells. Additionally, this laboratory is involved in the elucidation of the structural properties of microcapsules produced for "self-healing" applications. Our researchers have expertise in various instrumentations and characterizations including but not limited to: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Fourier-Transform Infrared, X-ray Diffractometry, Thermogravimetric Analysis, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, Cyclic Voltammetry, Electrospinning/spraying, Rheology & Chemometrics.
List of Researchers:

Dr. Nurshafiza Shahabudin
Dr. Ahmad Danial Azzahari
Dr. Siti Nor Farhana Yusuf
Mr. Mohd Hilmi Jaafar
Dr. Zainal Abidin Ali
Dr. Izlina Supa’at
2. Natural Products Research Group Laboratory located at MK4 (Natural Products Research Group)
Researchers in this laboratory conduct research on the extraction, isolation and purification of natural compounds from plants (forest trees and herbs) using various chromatographic methods. The structures of these natural compounds are elucidated using various spectroscopic techniques such as 1D and 2D-NMR, UV, IR and LCMS. The biological activities of natural extracts and compounds are also studied. Enzyme kinetic studies and molecular sequencing are also performed on compounds that are active inhibitors towards certain enzymes.
